About this place
Set on the 2nd floor of Hotel Monterey Kyoto, ZUIENTEI provides a relaxed haven for traditional Japanese cooking away from the busy downtown streets. At lunchtime, the popular Rokkaku Bento arranges a generous assortment of small bites inside a hexagonal container, from appetizers and simmered seasonal vegetables to deep-fried dishes, rice flavored with chirimen sansho (dried young sardines and fragrant Japanese pepper), and dessert. Diners seeking a more leisurely midday meal can also opt for seasonal sets such as the Hanamizuki Gozen, built around simmered bowls and assorted appetizers.
Evenings shift the focus toward multi-course kaiseki meals highlighting the produce of the season. Courses unfold in classic succession, featuring clear dashi-rich soups, fried specialties, and a closing tomewan bowl of red miso soup crafted with local Kyoto Ishino miso. Alongside the structured tasting menus, an à la carte selection includes Japanese Black wagyu steak, tendon, oyakodon, and sea bream dashi chazuke, pairing easily with beer, wine, or sake.
The dining room maintains a sense of privacy with standing screens set between tables, complemented by private tatami rooms. With elevator access throughout the hotel, wheelchair-friendly seating and restrooms, and baby chairs on hand, the space readily accommodates family gatherings and milestone celebrations. Advance reservations are accepted for both lunch and dinner, making it a reliable option for a planned sightseeing lunch or a calm evening meal.
